Black-and-white are his pictures and they deliver an image of an ancient, although heroic still stand-offish, even demonic landscape closer to a wintery Calabria than Portofino or Saint Tropez. Even the people which he captures ever so often, walking through Via Camerelle, one of the expensive shopping streets, or on the terrace of the Hotel Quisisana, appear as tough figures in a melancholy world with tight rules reflecting the outer appearance of the island. And very likely he thus captures much more of the actual charm of the island then any of the many illustrated books which seemingly concentrate more on the sweet Mediterranean life.
