Capri

SWR 2 (German South-West Radio) -Literature Part of a radio programme.

How can one publish a book, a coffee table book, about the island of Capri that everybody knows, or thinks he knows, as it is, no doubt, worldwide the island that has been more photographed than any other: piazza Umberto I, Villa San Michele, Via Krupp, Casa Malaparte. Processions, cemeteries or legendary hotels. The Blue Grotto, beautiful people, indifferent waiters... How can it be done? How does one set about to show all this in a way so new as if we had never seen it before?

In one single large and weighty volume published by the Prestel-Verlag we learn how this can be achieved. That is to say, in black and white, that wants to be different from colour photographs, with its own style and powerful resonance. The sea is here not blue but black as night; the nave of the church is not golden but deepest black; the cliffs at sunset are black as night, and the sea like curled silver. Quite honestly, there is little white to be seen; light grey! Above the gate of Villa Lysis we can read : "Dedicated to love and grief". This is what the book contains: something for people yearning for the South.
